• Begin your day at Beijing Craft Hardwood Museum, a traditional Beijing workshop known for its expertise in classic hardwood furniture.

• Watch artisans at work as they restore original Ming and Qing–style hardwood pieces, observing how they assess the wood, repair joints, and match materials.

• Learn how the “Beijing-style hardwood furniture making techniques” became part of China’s officially recognized intangible cultural heritage, and what it takes to keep this craft alive in a modern city.

(2) Mortise-and-Tenon Hands-on Session (”Luban Classroom”)

• Join a hands-on session focused on mortise-and-tenon joinery, the traditional system of interlocking wooden components used in Chinese architecture and furniture.

• Through simple models, your instructor will introduce the idea of the “skeleton” of a building—how beams, brackets, and joints work together before any decoration is added.

• Try assembling a dougong (bracket set) model or a small structural frame, listening to the crisp sound as each mortise and tenon locks into place.

• Reflect on the philosophy behind these techniques: structures that are stable yet flexible, created without a single nail and designed to balance strength and harmony.

• In the afternoon, head to the Temple of Heaven, the largest and most representative complex of ancient sacrificial buildings still standing in China.

• Walk through the historic park, following the route once taken by emperors during the annual rituals to pray for good harvests.
