Detailed Itinerary
Walk in the footsteps of Qing emperors on this 2-day Chengde escape from Beijing. Travel by high-speed train, explore the vast Mountain Resort and its temples, and experience living traces of Manchu, Mongolian, and Tibetan cultural exchange in a very real, unhurried way.
Day 1 – From Beijing to the Mountain Resort and “Little Potala Palace”
1. Morning: Beijing → Chengde by high-speed train & first impressions of the Mountain Resort
-
Depart from Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station and take a high-speed train to Chengde South (about 1 hour).
-
Meet your private driver on arrival and transfer by car to the Chengde Mountain Resort (around 20 minutes).
-
Begin your visit in the Lake Area, wandering past islets such as Ruyi Islet and lakeside pavilions like Misty Rain Tower. Here you can feel how the emperors used water, islands, and mist to create a sense of calm retreat.
-
Continue into the Plain Area, where you stroll through Ten-Thousand-Tree Garden and, if in season, see the resident sika deer. This part of the resort reflects the grasslands and hunting grounds of the “frontier” lands the emperor wished to symbolically “bring into” his garden.
-
Finally, explore the Mountain Area, taking a sightseeing vehicle up to a viewing point for a panoramic view of the entire resort. Along the way, your guide can explain the imperial idea of “harmony between heaven and humans” and the naming philosophy behind Emperor Kangxi’s famous “Thirty-Six Scenic Spots.”
-
Enjoy a relaxed lunch at a local restaurant near the resort, with Manchu-influenced dishes that connect you to Chengde’s multi-ethnic history.
-
You may try classics at a well-known local venue and taste specialties such as Manchu-style dishes and Chengde almond tea.
-
As you walk through courtyards, halls, and terrace platforms, your guide will explain how Chengde became a ritual and political center where Qing rulers met with Mongolian and Tibetan leaders.
-
Hear stories about the Panchen Lama’s eastward visit and the related Temple of Sumeru Happiness and Longevity, and how these visits and structures expressed Qing ideas of ruling a vast, multi-ethnic empire through ceremony and respect for local beliefs.
-
Check into your hotel in Chengde.
-
The evening is free: you might take a gentle walk near your hotel, enjoy a simple local dinner, or just rest and take in the quieter pace compared with Beijing.
Day 2 – Living Religion, Museum Stories & Return to Beijing
-
Step inside the Great Hall and look up at the gilded statue, which stands over 27 meters high. The scale and craftsmanship show both religious devotion and imperial ambition.
-
Learn how the temple’s layout combines Han and Tibetan elements and how Buddhism was used as a bridge between different regions and peoples inside the Qing Empire.
-
Focus on the galleries about the “Outer Eight Temples and Ethnic Integration” to understand how the temples around the Mountain Resort were used to welcome Mongolian, Tibetan, and other leaders.
-
Through artifacts, maps, and stories, you will see how Chengde embodied the Qing policy of “governing according to local customs” and how this shaped everyday life and identity in frontier regions.
-
Enjoy lunch in Chengde, with time for a final taste of local dishes.
-
After lunch, transfer to the station and take a high-speed train back to Beijing.
