Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Taiyuan: Introduction to Jin Culture

Arrive in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, and transfer to your hotel in the city center.
After a short rest, visit the Shanxi Museum, one of China’s leading provincial museums, to gain a structured overview of Jin culture—from ancient bronzes and early civilizations to merchant history and religious art. 

In the late afternoon and evening, explore Taiyuan Ancient County Town. Day 2 – Taiyuan to Pingyao: Ming–Qing Merchant City & Lacquerware Heritage

After breakfast, drive about 1.5 hours to Pingyao Ancient City, one of China’s best‑preserved Ming–Qing period walled towns. Check in to a characterful guesthouse inside the old city, often set in a traditional courtyard house.

Spend the day exploring Pingyao’s core sights:

• Rishengchang Draft Bank, often called China’s first “bank,” where you learn how Shanxi merchants created financial networks across the empire.

• The Pingyao County Government Office (yamen), which shows how local administration, justice, and daily governance worked in imperial times.
