Detailed Itinerary

1. Morning – In‑Depth Palace Museum (Forbidden City)

(1) Start your day with a pre‑booked timed entry, using a reserved access channel (advance online booking required, usually 7 days ahead).

(2) Follow an in‑depth route designed to tell a clear story rather than just rushing through the central axis:

  • Enter through the Meridian Gate (Wu Men) and, where possible, go up onto the gate towers for an elevated perspective of the front courtyards and exhibition spaces.
  • Walk into the Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihe Dian) area, learning how this grand hall symbolized imperial authority and was used for the most important state ceremonies.
  •  Continue to the Palace of Heavenly Purity (Qianqing Gong) to see where emperors handled key affairs of state and issued important edicts.
  • Visit the Hall of Mental Cultivation (Yangxin Dian), associated with the Grand Council, to understand how late Qing governance shifted behind the scenes into more intimate, controlled spaces.
  • Explore the Treasure Gallery, where selected pieces illustrate imperial taste, craftsmanship, and the aesthetics of the inner court.
  • Exit at the Gate of Divine Prowess (Shenwu Men) on the north side, completing a full northbound passage through the palace.

(3) Along the way, your guide helps you read the symbolic layout of the Forbidden City:

  • The idea of “ancestral temples on the left, altars on the right” and “front for court, rear for residence” in the wider capital plan.
  • How the central north–south axis, courtyards, and halls embodied ideals such as uprightness, balance, and humane rule.
  •  How roof ridges, mythical roof animals, bracket sets, and painted patterns were used to indicate rank and ritual importance.

2. Midday – Lunch with a View over the Forbidden City

  • Walk or drive a short distance to Jingshan Park.

  • Enjoy lunch at a restaurant near the park that offers view tables overlooking the Forbidden City’s golden roofs (subject to availability and weather).

  • Savor Beijing specialties in a relaxed setting while seeing the palace you have just walked through from a new angle.

3. Afternoon – Intangible Cultural Heritage Handicraft Experience (Wangfujing Area)

(1) Continue to a handicraft and arts space near Wangfujing, which showcases officially recognized forms of intangible cultural heritage.

(2) Visit the display area to see examples of traditional palace‑related crafts (often grouped under what are known as the “Eight Great Palace Crafts” of Beijing), such as:

  • work with inlay, lacquer, cloisonné enamel
  • fine carving, decorative painting, or other detailed techniques used in court objects

(3) Under the guidance of an experienced craft teacher, take part in a hands‑on workshop:

  • Learn about the historical background of the craft you are practicing and how it was used in the imperial palace or by city artisans.
  • Follow step‑by‑step instructions to create your own piece (for example, a small decorative item, painted piece, or simple inlay object), using traditional materials where possible.
  • Take your finished work home as a tangible reminder of the day and of Beijing’s living craft traditions.

(4) The session is designed to be accessible for beginners, while still giving a real sense of the time, patience, and skill that palace crafts once required.

PerOrient gave me a completely different view of Beijing. My favorite part was making a cloisonné bookmark and learning about the Yanjing Eight Crafts—it was much more memorable than just visiting museums. Luna was an excellent guide, and every detail was thoughtfully arranged.

Ethan Brooks

Not gonna lie… I booked this tour because I wanted beautiful photos, but I ended up loving the cultural experiences way more. Making my own cloisonné piece was SO satisfying, and now it’s sitting on my desk back home. Huge thanks to Lisa for making history feel fun instead of overwhelming.
